Gimpy the Bat

gimpybat“Gimpy,” this tiny three gram brown bat pup with a broken femur came in with a group of orphans displaced from a barn colony. The fracture was very hard to set because a bat’s wing membrane envelopes the bones of both the front and hind limbs.

batbigWe slit the membrane on either side of the fracture. Then used a small strip of surgical tape to make a cast.

Gimpy grew into a strong healthy bat. He was released back into the wild in August 2007.

Note: A paper clip weighs one gram. That gives you some idea of how small the little fellow was.
